Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 vs Maxxis Premitra HP5

This head-to-head pitches the premium-touring Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 against the sportier, value-driven Maxxis Premitra HP5 across 13 shared tests in popular 16-17-inch sizes. Despite different missions, they overlap heavily in dry and wet safety, economy, comfort, and longevity - revealing clear trade-offs between long-haul efficiency and agile, budget-friendly performance.

Across the dataset, Goodyear consistently delivers class-leading wear life, low rolling resistance, and quiet refinement, often translating to best-in-test value even when its purchase price is higher. Maxxis frequently counters with sharper feel and shorter braking in the dry, plus notably stronger aquaplaning resistance - attributes that appeal to enthusiastic drivers and heavy rain regions.

Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2eight
eight wins
Maxxis Premitra HP5five
five wins

While it might look like the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 is better than the Maxxis Premitra HP5 purely based on the higher number of test wins, tires are very complicated objects which means where one tire is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tires compare across multiple tire test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Exceptional wear life and best-in-test value across multiple tests
  • Very low rolling resistance and strong fuel economy
  • Lowest external noise and high ride comfort
  • Consistently balanced handling with strong wet-circle performance
  • Strong aquaplaning resistance (straight and curved) and confident wet stability
  • Frequent wins in dry and wet braking, sporty steering feel
  • Lower purchase price across sizes
  • Engaging handling character with good subjective feedback

Dry Braking

Looking at data from ten tire tests, the Maxxis Premitra HP5 was better during seven dry braking tests. On average the Maxxis Premitra HP5 stopped the vehicle in 1.26% less distance than the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2.

Real World Driver Reviews

Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 Driver Reviews

Across 101 reviews, the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 is most often praised as a premium touring tire with outstanding longevity, strong day-to-day grip (dry and frequently wet), and a noticeably quiet, comfortable ride with good fuel economy. Many drivers report very high mileages with slow, even wear and stable motorway manners, making it especially popular for high-mileage commuting and taxi/fleet use. A smaller but recurring set of complaints centers on a soft sidewall feel (vague/"spongy" steering, tramlining or less confidence when pushed) and, for some users, increased or unusually high road noise as the tire ages; a minority also note weaker wet braking/traction than expected.

Based on 112 reviews with an average rating of 85%

Maxxis Premitra HP5 Driver Reviews

Most drivers rate the Maxxis Premitra HP5 positively for strong dry and wet grip, good handling/feedback, and solid value, with several comparing it favorably to premium brands. However, a notable minority report fast tread wear and performance drop-off near end-of-life, plus some complaints about noise (especially on coarse/chip seal) and occasional wet grip variability at higher speeds. Overall sentiment is mixed-to-positive and price-to-performance is a key strength, but durability and noise are recurring caveats.

Been looking for new set of summer tires after decided to change my wheels size too, I went from 17” wheels down to 16” and fitted new set of Goodyear efficient grip performance 2, latest model tires, they were made in week 7 of 2020 and I fitted them in week 8 of 2020, absolutely brand new and fresh rubber. So far so good, traveled around 1000 miles and tires are excellent, performance, comfort, even though they are smaller size there is no negative performance, corners great, braking in both dry and wet is good, car feels very positive to drive , noise level also good. Conclusion

Goodyear is the more rounded tire for everyday road use: it pairs competitive grip with outstanding tread life (often 50-100% longer), very low rolling resistance, and the lowest noise on test, making it the stronger long-term value despite higher upfront cost. Its main weakness is aquaplaning resistance, where it trails Maxxis, and occasionally slightly longer dry stops.

Maxxis brings a sportier edge at a lower price, with frequent wins in dry and wet braking and a secure aquaplaning buffer that boosts confidence in heavy rain. The trade-off is higher wear, higher fuel use, and more noise on average. If you prioritize sharp responses and rain security on a budget, Maxxis fits well; for high-mileage comfort, economy, and overall balance, Goodyear is the safer bet.
Key Differences
  • Longevity: Goodyear out-wears Maxxis by 50-100% in multiple tests (e.g., 51-84% edges).
  • Economy: Goodyear's rolling resistance advantage is large (13-25%), aiding fuel savings.
  • Noise/comfort: Goodyear is consistently quieter and more refined.
  • Aquaplaning: Maxxis has a clear advantage in straight and curved aquaplaning.
  • Braking pattern: Maxxis often stops shorter in the dry and sometimes in the wet; Goodyear is stronger in wet lateral grip (wet circle) and stability.
  • Price vs value: Maxxis is cheaper to buy; Goodyear usually wins overall value when factoring mileage.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tire industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tires in the same test.

Why is this important? Tire testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tire test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tire tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tire Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tire comparison, Tire Reviews doesn't.
