How do eight-year-old tires with a reasonable tread depth hold up? A tire is said to improve on dry asphalt as it wears, something we can confirm. The used tire shows the lowest consumption and best stopping distance on dry roads. The rubber also performs reasonably well on wet roads with an acceptable braking distance and is not far behind in cornering grip. Snow grip is also not far off from the new tires. The major downside is a clear deterioration in ice grip. However, in icy corners, it communicates well with the driver about where the grip limit is and remains easy to handle under pressure. In fact, it holds up well compared to the budget tire even on ice. Investing in quality pays off for many years to come.

The Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 has one test here, and it assessed a lightly used example made in 2015, already eight years old. Its last place among eight studded tires in Vi Bilagare's 2023 comparison therefore describes that aged example, not the model when new. Ice braking and traction were both last, with deficits of 49% and 56% to the best; ice handling was seventh, 8.4% behind. The testers singled out deteriorated ice grip as its main drawback, while finding its communication at the limit clear and its behavior manageable.

The same worn example was much stronger on bare roads: dry braking was first of eight at 31.4 m, subjective dry handling third and rolling resistance first. Noise was second. Wet braking was fourth, only 3.3% behind the best, while wet handling was seventh with a smaller 1.9% time deficit, consistent with the verdict that wet performance remained reasonable. Snow traction was third, 1% behind, but snow braking seventh and handling last, 5.6% behind the best. Those results put the testers' broadly favorable snow comments in perspective. Neither the useful dry-road results nor the ice losses establish how a new example would perform or how consistently other examples age.
