Which should you buy?
Choose the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P if you want the most complete winter tire-especially if your winter is mainly wet/cold asphalt and you prioritize braking, balanced handling and efficiency. Choose the Hankook Winter i*cept RS3 if standing water and aquaplaning resistance are your top concern and you want strong value (often with good snow braking and competitive wear), accepting that its dry/wet braking and on-limit balance generally trail the Continental.
Where the WinterContact TS 870 P is stronger
- Consistently shorter braking on dry roads (wins 7/7 dry braking comparisons; typically ~3-4% shorter, e.g., 44.2 m vs 46.1 m in sport auto 2026)
- Stronger wet safety balance: frequent best-in-test wet braking/handling results (wet braking wins 6/7; wet handling wins 5/5 where measured)
- Refinement and efficiency advantages in most datasets (often quieter and lower rolling resistance; e.g., 7.7 vs 8.0 kg/t RR in 2026/27 and 7.0 vs 8.2 kg/t in AMS 2025)
Where the Winter I cept RS3 is stronger
- Best-in-class aquaplaning protection across the shared evidence (wins straight aquaplaning 7/7; often +3-6% higher float-off speeds)
- Frequently strong on-snow braking results (wins snow braking 4/7, including several ADAC/AMS outcomes)
- Often competitive wear/eco metrics in independent scoring (e.g., longer wear in ADAC 2024 17-inch: 49,300 km vs 43,300 km; lower abrasion there too)
The bullet points are analysis of the shared tests and of owner reviews; the measured wins in each discipline are in the tables below. Where the two disagree, the figures are right.

Braking distances and lap times are better when lower; speeds, wear and grip figures when higher. A test's figures are its own: sizes, cars, surfaces and temperatures differ from one to the next, which is why the averages here are only ever of tests the two tires shared. "Scored" rows are subjective driver ratings: each test uses its own scale, so only the wins are counted.

- Strong wet grip and confident wet cornering
- Strong dry grip with secure traction
- Noticeably quiet on the road
- Comfortable, supple ride quality
- Snow traction not as strong as expected for some drivers

All 33 WinterContact TS 870 P reviewsI've driven the tires in the winter, but on roads devoid of snow and ice so I can't comment on that. They made me feel very secure, however, I have to say that they are far too sporty for my driving style and needs. They carry a lot of responsibility for my decision to buy the car, as they are very comfortable, quiet and make the car feel very surefooted and responsive in the dry and in the wet.
There is one gripe, though, they have absolutely no rim protection, so I blame them for all the scratching on my wheels. I would expect more from a tire of this class from a reputable brand, and, honestly, it is a strong enough reason (albeit the only one) for me not to buy them again. In every other aspect they are brilliant, they even equal summer tires in fuel consumption.
Hankook Winter I cept RS3
- 77%from 28 reviews
- 74%would buy again
- 156,320 milesdriven by reviewers
Owners generally rate the Hankook Winter I cept RS3 as a capable winter tire with strong real-world grip, particularly in snow and wet conditions, backed up by solid dry grip and handling for a winter pattern. Around two in five owners specifically praise snow traction and wet grip, and a smaller but meaningful group also mention confident aquaplaning resistance and wet handling. The standout drawback is road noise: nearly two thirds of owners mention it and most of those are unhappy, often describing it as noticeably loud at speed. A smaller group also report softer, less responsive steering feel, with mixed feedback on tread life.
- Strong snow traction and confidence in winter conditions
- Reassuring wet grip
- Very good dry grip for a winter tire
- Secure wet handling
- Noticeably loud road noise, especially at speed
- Steering feels soft / less responsive
- Mixed or disappointing tread life

All 28 Winter I cept RS3 reviewsI drove some 13000 km with them, once they got 3 years old dry rot cracks were already visible in the tread area around the tread blocks, my winter tires before them were Continental TS850 replaced at 10 years old, gave them away to my father, they were made in 2012, still no dry rot cracks in them at 14 years old, but they aren't as grippy as my new Hankooks. However, Continental is a premium class, Hankooks are middle and now I can see why.
What I misjudged about Hankooks is noise above some 95 km/h, it's more the engine getting more noisy similar noise to the tires humming excessively, once I distinguished that, I can say these Hankooks aren't noisy at all. However, dry rot at just 3 years old is not what I like, I almost wish I paid 80 euros per tire for premium class instead 60 for these Hankooks, they surely aren't going to last me 10 years due to dry rot. But for now, they do their job well, if you wear out tires within a few years, they are good tires

Reading the results
Written from the test results and owner reviews above. It is analysis, not a measurement: where it and the tables disagree, the tables are right.
This is a comparison between two mainstream European-style winter tires that aim to cover the same real-world brief-cold, wet roads with periodic snow-but they go about it differently. The Continental WinterContact TS 870 P is positioned as a more performance-leaning (UHP) winter tire, while the Hankook Winter i*cept RS3 is pitched closer to a premium-touring winter option, typically appealing on value and day-to-day usability.
Across seven shared professional tests (spanning 16-17 inch sizes), the pattern is consistent: the Continental is the more complete “do-everything” performer, repeatedly scoring near the top overall (including multiple test wins), while the Hankook tends to land mid-pack overall but pops up as a specialist in standing-water security. Expect this comparison to hinge on whether you prioritize wet-road braking/handling and efficiency (Continental) or aquaplaning resistance and often-strong snow numbers at a usually lower buy-in (Hankook).
Conclusion
Looking across the shared tests, the Continental WinterContact TS 870 P is the clearer all-rounder and the more frequent top-ranker: it finishes ahead in most overall results (e.g., 2/9 vs 7/9 in the 2026/27 test, 1/9 vs 6/9 in sport auto 2026, and 1/10 vs 4/10 in AMS 2025). The reason is repeatable, not accidental-Continental dominates the core safety metrics on typical winter roads. It wins dry braking in every shared dataset (7/7) and is usually stronger in wet braking and wet handling too (wet braking wins 6/7; wet handling wins 5/5 where measured). Those gaps are small in percentage terms in some tests (often ~2-5%), but they're meaningful because they show up in exactly the situations that decide near-misses in winter: stopping distances and stability on damp, cold asphalt.
The Hankook Winter i*cept RS3's standout advantage is aquaplaning resistance. It wins straight-line aquaplaning in all seven shared tests (often by ~3-6%; e.g., 90.8 vs 85.7 km/h in the 2026/27 test, and 82.9 vs 78.5 km/h in sport auto 2026), and it frequently leads in curved aquaplaning too. On snow, the story is more mixed: Hankook often brakes very well on snow (snow braking wins 4/7), but it can also show real trade-offs depending on test format-sport auto 2026 highlighted notably weaker snow traction for the Hankook (1.10 vs 1.32), and several reports mention understeer/slow front-end response that can dull confidence. Value-wise, Hankook is repeatedly described as a strong “price/performance” pick (e.g., Auto Bild 2022 value metric advantage), while the Continental tends to cost more but consistently buys you top-tier wet-and-dry control. The practical takeaway: if you want one winter tire that rarely forces compromises, pick the TS 870 P; if your winter is dominated by heavy rain, standing water, and you want strong aquaplaning security at a sharper price, the RS3 is the rational alternative-just accept it won't match the Continental's braking-led polish.
