Toyo R1R Owner Reviews

Review this tire

What owners say summarised from 27 reviews

The Toyo R1R receives very favorable owner reviews, with dry and wet grip the clearest shared strengths. Handling, steering feedback and predictable breakaway also draw substantially more praise than criticism. Heat resistance is the main recurring limitation, with around one in five reviews describing overheating during sustained hard or track use. Tread-life opinions are more mixed than grip verdicts, while a smaller group finds the tire noisy. Mid-life and end-of-life reports include continued road confidence, but one later-life account describes less predictable wet behavior near the wear bars, so the strong grip reports do not establish unchanged performance throughout its life.

FANTASTIC tires great grip and feel on the steering wheel without any oversteer understeer on exit of twists Even at full throttle, very good braking "passes" very smooth their 192hp from rx8 very smooth cornering, without sharp reactions even in the limit and with electronic devices of eights off. finally feels like driving on the "rails" in size 225/40 / 18, and I'll definitely buy two . WET not even try.

I use these every day going back and fore to work 70miles a day they wear fast but not as bad as I thought they would, brilliant in the dry and really good in the wet can't fault them at all. Did a track day in these as well went with 6mm on the front and 5mm on the rear after I swooped them over, they didn't miss a beat! Heated up well and they just kept gripping and gripping and I still have enough meat on then for a few thousand miles yet

I have been running these tires for the past few months on my Focus ST. Dry grip on the road is fantatstic -the car turns in instantly, there is no squirming under hard braking and the traction control system seems to have no work to do when accelerating! I expected wet grip to be scary, but I was wrong. On a number of occassions I have been on the motorway during some pretty heavy downpours and the car has remained confidence inspiring. However, I still treat large amounts of standing water with great respect, as I would on any tire.

I have taken the car for a few laps around Silverstone. Grip was fantastic when the track was damp. However, they did seem to overheat after three laps when the track was dry.

I haven't tried them in the recent snow - the car has stayed on the drive for the duration!

Wear has not been too bad thus far - 2mm have gone in the time it has taken to cover 5000 miles.

I can recommend these tires for anyone who is looking for extra grip in the dry, with the odd light trackday thrown in too.

I have these tires on my Peugeot S16 (167HP) on roads are spectacular, with excellent grip, no tire probe before has the grip of these, the trouble is that they are very sensitive and therefore suffer on bumps, but to go to high speed they are the best

310 turbo hp on a front wheel drive car was tough to get the power to the ground. i tried 3 other tire brands and then i found the toyo R1R. these tires are super grippy, you can almost push your fingernail onto the rubber but man do they grip! Finally i found a tire that could actually put the power to the groud. these tires amazingly stick to the corners and dont squeal and complain when pushing them hard but will softly let you know when you are getting to the limits. now they are quite noisy between 50 and 70 mph but start to quiet down after 1000 miles. don,t expect to buy these for mileage as their softness will wear out pretty quick but for driving enjoyment with the ultimate grip i recommend these!

I have been using these R1R's on my track car for over a year now, at cadwell Park and Blyton. One particular day at Blyton, th erain was so heavy that everyone else left the track, I was out there pushing faster and saster each lap. In the rain, these tires are awesome on a light car. I am buying some for my Evo IX as I feel they offer the best of both worlds. The soft compound means they dont last a long time and on track, they can overheat in the dry after only 7-8 laps. In the wet they just get better and better. Ok, they'll never offer the same level of grip as the 888, but the 888 just won't give you any grip in the wet in standing water.
R1R's are a galaxy away from the old T1R's, which I dont rate at all.

Just done track day at cadwell,The grip was beyond my exspectations, they would not let go! even when we had a heavy shower and almost everyone who stayed out spun or had serious dramas the R1Rs remained planted, A braver or better driver could have pushed much harder.used T1Rs befor,no comparison.

Bought these for sprinting as you need something that warms up quickly. However I used them for a track day rather than shred my road tires. After a bit of playing with pressures the initial impression was lots of grip in the dry, however they do react better with proper progressive loading up as they warm, if you push too hard too soon them get a bit squirmy, and at the other end more than about 15 miles of hard use and they get too hot and start to shred if you continue too push them. In the wet still loads of grip, probally due to the hot running nature of the tire, although progression goes down a step or two. Still lots of fun while they lasted, about 150 miles, still lots of tread in the middle, just scrubbed the shoulders off (Now I need an anticlockwise circuit to do the other side). I think for this sort of use R888s are better (apparently the same commpound as R1-Rs) as the carcuss and tread form better support the rubber.

Got them on my TVR, drove over to LeMans last year and went through some really heavy rain with out a problem, the guys behind said all they could see were 2 massive rooster tails and 2 fat dry lines on the road.
Given them some 'beanz' on the twisty stuff and they stick like poo to a blanket!
Never really reached the limits on them as the limit is soo far off that you'd have to be driving at crazy speeds on the public roads to find out where the limmits are?
A friend has them on his Tamora also and has done a couple of trackdays on them and said they were great but got a little over heated on long runs (20min+).
Seriously thinking of putting a set on my BMW 330d M-sport....
