Across seven independent all-terrain/all-season comparisons, the Toyo Open Country AT III repeatedly shows a clear split personality: it is consistently strong on dry roads and competent off-road, but is regularly marked down by wet-surface security and refinement. On the road it can look very capable in the dry: ADAC 2025 called it “the best tire on dry roads” with the strongest subjective dry handling rating, while Tire Rack 2025 backed up the confidence angle with “predictable and trustworthy” behavior and consistent success in the emergency lane change. Off-road, it posts strong subjective results (e.g. 1st of 9 for subjective gravel handling in 2022/23) and testers repeatedly note good traction.
The exceptions come when grip is limited or water is involved. Wet performance is a recurring weak point, highlighted by ADAC 2025 where it was last for straight-line aquaplaning and second-from-last for curved aquaplaning, and the same test report noted it was only “sufficient” on the wet handling course. Third place with this score weighting goes to the Toyo Open Country ATIII, I always enjoy driving this tire whatever the conditions, and it had good traction in all tests, but did seem to give up a little braking performance to get that traction.

The Toyo Open Country A/T III was a similar tire to the BFGoodrich, in that it had a better off-road performance than its on-road grip, but it did brake better in the dry and wet which is why it finished higher overall. It certainly wasn't as refined as the BFG, with more nose, less comfort and a higher rolling resistance.
