Toyo Proxes Comfort vs Uniroyal RainSport 5

This head-to-head pits Toyo's Proxes Comfort, a premium-touring summer tire, against Uniroyal's RainSport 5, an ultra-high-performance option known for its wet-road reputation. Across seven shared tests from 2021-2025 in popular sizes (205/55 R16 to 225/40 R18), we see a clear pattern: Toyo consistently places higher overall and dominates dry braking and balanced handling, while Uniroyal leans on strong aquaplaning resistance and select wet metrics.

The nuance lies in how each tire delivers its strengths. Toyo posts shorter dry stops in every test and often matches or narrowly trails in wet braking, translating to predictable all-round road manners. Uniroyal counters with class-leading straight and curved aquaplaning performance and occasional wins in wet braking/handling, but with trade-offs in dry precision and, in several tests, projected mileage and efficiency.

Uniroyal RainSport 5 Driver Reviews

Most drivers find the Uniroyal RainSport 5 excels in the wet, repeatedly praising its grip and aquaplaning resistance, with many noting a quiet, comfortable ride and good value. Dry performance is generally adequate for everyday use, though not a true sporty tire. A notable minority, especially on performance or RWD cars, report soft sidewalls leading to vague steering and high-speed stability concerns, and some mention faster-than-expected wear. Overall sentiment is positive, with the RainSport 5 best suited to commuters and wet climates rather than spirited driving.

Best Review for the Toyo Proxes Comfort
Given 70% 195/55 R16 on mostly motorways for 500 easy going miles
I chose the Toyo Proxes Comfort because they had great price and Wet rating A. I have two on the rear and on the front I have two Michelin Energy Saver +. I can't really tell the difference from before when I had four of the above mentioned Michelin. They seem too have decent dry grip and feel good on wet too. I drive quite carefully and rarely push to the limit, although I must say I've done a couple of roundabouts and turns in a speedy manner without losing grip on the rear. So far so good, will see on the long run. For now, it's buy again

Good tire for the price with superb wet road performance, tackles standing water with ease. Expecting the fronts to last for around 20k before replacing with the rears probably good for another 10k. Not on the same level as a Pilot sport or Sportcontact in overall performance/longevity, but quite a bit cheaper.

Conclusion

Across the test portfolio, Toyo Proxes Comfort is the more complete performer: higher overall rankings (6 test wins vs 0), class-leading dry braking in every matchup, and solid wet consistency that keeps it near the front even when Uniroyal shines in deep water. It also posts advantages in fuel use, abrasion and tire weight in key ADAC metrics, reinforcing its touring brief.

Uniroyal RainSport 5 earns its name in deep-water security-frequently topping aquaplaning tests and taking some wet braking wins-but it's held back by softer dry dynamics, vague feedback at the limit and mixed longevity/value results depending on the test. If your priority is maximum aquaplaning safety in heavy rain, Uniroyal appeals; for balanced, day-to-day confidence with shorter dry stops and better overall test outcomes, Toyo is the safer, more rounded choice.
Key Differences
  • Overall results: Toyo leads decisively (6 wins vs 0; higher placements in major tests).
  • Dry capability: Toyo wins dry braking 7/7 and shows more precise dry handling; Uniroyal reports vague dry feedback.
  • Wet profile: Uniroyal excels in aquaplaning (wins straight 3/3, curved 2/2) and takes 4/7 wet braking; Toyo is steadier but less dominant in deep water.
  • Efficiency and wear: ADAC shows Toyo lower fuel consumption and abrasion, with higher projected mileage; some magazine tests flip wear/value in Uniroyal's favor.
  • Noise/comfort: Marginal edge to Uniroyal on exterior noise in several tests; Toyo remains refined and composed.
  • Price/value: Uniroyal often cheaper with better price/value indices in some tests; Toyo offsets with stronger overall performance.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tire industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tires in the same test.

Why is this important? Tire testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tire test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tire tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tire Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tire comparison, Tire Reviews doesn't.
