The Toyo R888R is a difficult tire to drive at the very limit. At 8/10th the tire feels sporty with direct steering and a nice weighting, however when you get to the limit the tires balance moves around without much feedback, and once past the limit of grip is oversteers very quickly. The tire also produces a lot of tread pattern noise at speed.

The Toyo R888 R shows a split personality: strong dry performance potential in some contexts but consistently weak wet capability. Across three summer tests, it averaged 3.7th overall, driven by an excellent 2/10 overall in Sport Auto (near-best dry braking/handling) yet hampered by last place results in Auto Bild's wet tests and a poor subjective dry score in the 2021 comparison. Its dry braking is competitive and one-lap pace can be strong, but stability/subjective balance and wet safety are clear liabilities.

Overall, the tire excels when hot and on dedicated track-style surfaces but falls behind in broad-useability metrics, particularly wet grip and aquaplaning. Awards are mixed, with no test wins and multiple bottom finishes in wet categories, pulling down the overall score.
