All Season vs All Terrain Tires Tested: Do You Actually Need an All Terrain? Not ranked

The Pirelli Scorpion XTM AT is the best all-terrain I have tested and the one that gives up least to an all-season on the road. Off road it had no real grip advantage over the all-season here, but it steered better in the sand and on the side hill, stopped shorter in the snow and, most importantly, came through the same off-road abuse looking fresh. Buy it if you regularly drive rough trails, dirt roads or mud and want a tire that keeps working, and looks the part, mile after mile.

Performance Analysis

Drawn from 3 tests. Updated October 20, 2026.

Across three independent all-season all-terrain comparisons, the Pirelli Scorpion XTM AT has been consistently class-leading overall (average position 1st; 1/7 Test Winner in the 2026 all-terrain group test, plus 1/2 wins in both a 2026 all-season vs all-terrain comparison and a 2025 head-to-head vs BFGoodrich KO3). The recurring pattern is a tire that combines strong off-road capability with unusually sharp on-road manners for the category: it was best for dirt handling in the 2026 all-terrain test (1/8, 74.05s) and was repeatedly praised for steering response and predictability on tarmac and loose terrain (2025 KO3 comparison), while also staying close to the best on wet/dry braking and handling (e.g. 2/8 wet handling +2.0% and 2/8 dry braking +1.8% in 2026).

The main caveats are refinement and efficiency rather than outright grip. Testers repeatedly note it is “not quite at the top for aquaplaning, comfort or measured noise” (2026 all-terrain test), and it trailed rivals on measured noise (54.95 dB, 4/8) and subjective comfort/noise (both 4/8) in that same test; in the 2025 KO3 comparison it was also “a touch noisier” and “slightly firmer”. Value and rolling resistance were also weak in the 2026 all-season vs all-terrain comparison (value 3/3, +58.1% from best; rolling resistance +13.4%), standing out as the key exceptions to its otherwise front-running results.

The BEST All Terrain Tires for 2026 Tested and Rated

Tire Reviews 265/70 R17 Tested by Tire Reviews Winner

The Pirelli Scorpion XTM AT is my Test Winner. It was the strongest all-terrain tire overall, with best results in dirt handling, subjective dirt handling, snow traction, subjective snow handling and subjective wet handling. It was also right at the front in dry braking, wet braking, wet handling and snow braking, with only small gaps to the best. On the road it was not the quietest or most comfortable tire, but those results were still competitive rather than a serious issue. I'd choose it for drivers wanting a proper all-terrain tire that still feels sharp, secure and enjoyable on road, wet, snow and dirt.

BFGoodrich All Terrain KO3 vs Pirelli Scorpion XTM AT

Tire Reviews 285/70 R17 Tested by Tire Reviews

The new Scorpion XTM marks a significant step forward for Pirelli in the all-terrain space. Designed with the North American market in mind, it combines a more aggressive tread with a lighter overall weight, sharper steering, and strong all-surface performance. On-road, the XTM offers a firmer ride on initial impact but quickly settles, giving it an edge on surfaces with constant minor imperfections. Noise levels are competitive with the KO3, but its real advantage lies in steering response and predictability, both on tarmac and loose terrain. Off-road, it proved equally grippy while being easier to control, especially when sliding or steering out of ruts. In this test, the XTM edged ahead overall, showing Pirelli has built a genuine rival to the established leaders.
