Dunlop SP Sport Maxx Owner Reviews

Review this tire

What owners say summarised from 144 reviews

Dry grip and dry handling are the clearest shared positives for the Dunlop SP Sport Maxx. Tread life is mixed, with longer-term accounts ranging from early replacement to substantial mileage, although wear complaints outnumber praise overall. Around a quarter of owners criticise noise, while a smaller but sizeable group finds it quiet. Wet-grip opinion is almost evenly divided, so neither strong wet confidence nor poor wet grip is a consistent verdict. Most reviews do not identify life stage, and repeat reviewers move in both directions, giving no clear shared ageing trend. Comfort is also mixed, with criticism somewhat more common than praise.

These were fitted new by an Audi main dealer when I purchased the car second-hand. During my 12 month ownership I have always adjusted my tire pressures according to the weight in the vehicle hoping to increase tire life. After only 8 months of ownership I noticed they had started to wear on the outer edges on all four of my tires & also cracking in between the tread around the circumference of the tires, the middle of each tire had approx 5/6mm of tread left. When the car went into Audi for warranty work I mentioned the tires & the reply was "it is normal wear because it's a big, heavy vehicle". Now, 2 months after it went into Audi my tires are really bad on the outer edges ( the near side front & back seem to be the worst) but the rest of the tire still has at least 5mm of really good tread. I fitted the same type of tire to the front of my wife's Golf GTI nearly 20k ago & they've been brilliant but I'm sorry to say that this isn't the case on my Q7 & at £260+ each tire I'll be searching around for something a bit more long lasting, really disappointed.

Came with car as original spec, had replace fronts afte 26000 miles, the rears have just went through a MOT with 36000 miles on them, still 1mm above legal!!!!!!
The fronts were replaced with Khumo Ecasta and 10000 miles there not much better than the rears. Will be replacing all 4 with the Dunlops. the tire noise is very noticeably lower than the Khumo's as well.

Moved onto these from fastresponse tires.
Dry grip is good but as soon as light rain hits the bitumen I start wheelspinning from standing start. My car isn't that powerful.
Road noise was noticably louder and initially annoying until I got used to it to the point that the mechanic remarked and reminded me how noisey they were.
Wears pretty fast but I'm expecting about 20000kms out of them on average-spirited urban driving.

Amazing tire, however I do not have the budget to buy these again, they lasted 35,000 kms and were excellent in the wet. I could take a high speed bend at full throttle as I would not even dare to do so in my other car (s14). Overall, I am extremely happy but I do not have the budget to replace these... Looking for cheaper options atm.

Poor traction in the dry with hard acceleration tires damaged easily from stones expensive to buy. I think you just pay for the name.these tires lasted 15000 KM. I would not buy again.

These were standard fitment on my new Seat and have lasted really well. 26000 miles and plenty of wear left (at least 4mm) but unfortunately very little grip left. I don't drive particularly hard but have very little confidence in these, especially in the wet. I have had to change them even though there are several thousand miles wear left in them.

Would like a tire that perform a little better overall and is a lot quieter. Not convinced about their wet handling and steering is too heavy at low speeds. I believe they were developed years ago now so probably outdated.

Only had these tires 2000 miles as factory fit in 215/40 R17 V but I'll be glad when they are worn out. Grip is average in all summer conditions, noise levels are high contrary to there supposed rating and they transmit to much negative road surface feedback into the car, particularly when the temperature is 20 degrees plus.

Cannot comment on wear with only a couple of thousand miles but as above, I hope its poor.

The dry and wet weather performance on the tires are very good and I never had any fear sticking it into a bend. The issue I have with the tires is the wear. I got just over 8500 miles out of them and discussing with the fitter of my new tires, this is a fairly poor return and there are better, cheaper options available. I do drive in a "spirited" manner but I'm not on the edge 24/7 so the wear is definitely worse than I would expect.

Wet, dry grip and cornering are excelent, but does not keep the same quality after 10000 km. noise is ignorable and better than many others.
