Bridgestone Potenza Sport vs Toyo Proxes Comfort

This head-to-head pits two very different summer tires against each other: Bridgestone's Potenza Sport, a max-performance option aimed at dynamic drivers, versus Toyo's Proxes Comfort, a premium-touring tire prioritising refinement and efficiency. Tested across three shared comparisons in 225/40 R18 and 225/55 R17, the data spans dry and wet safety metrics, aquaplaning, comfort, efficiency, wear, and value.
Across all tests, the Potenza Sport consistently delivers shorter braking distances and higher handling speeds, particularly in the wet, while the Proxes Comfort leans into lower noise, better price/value, and competitive aquaplaning/rolling resistance. The result is a clear performance leader versus a comfort/value specialist.

  • Competitive aquaplaning resistance and often lower rolling resistance in larger size
  • Quieter operation (≈2-3 dB lower noise in two tests)
  • Better value metrics in Auto Bild (€7.98 per 1,000 km; lower set price)
  • Good rolling resistance in key sizes, aiding fuel economy
  • Solid straight and curved aquaplaning reserves for a touring tire

Real World Driver Reviews

Bridgestone Potenza Sport Driver Reviews

Across 117 reviews, the Bridgestone Potenza Sport is most often described as a very high-grip UHP tire with standout dry and especially wet traction, sharp steering response, and strong braking that makes cars feel more precise and confidence-inspiring. The most consistent downside is rapid wear/short life (particularly on powerful cars, driven hard, or with track use), with many also noting higher road noise and a firm ride. A recurring theme is temperature sensitivity: performance is excellent once warmed, but several drivers report reduced confidence/traction in cold conditions, and track durability is frequently criticized due to chunking or “melting” when pushed.

Toyo Proxes Comfort Driver Reviews

Most drivers rate the Toyo Proxes Comfort highly, praising its strong wet and dry grip, quiet and comfortable ride, and excellent value and wear for daily use. Many report predictable handling and confidence in rain, with several noting good motorway manners. A minority found the tire less engaging when pushed, citing early understeer and weaker dry braking at the limit. Overall sentiment is solidly positive with standout performance for the price.

Best Review for the Bridgestone Potenza Sport
Given 81% 225/45 R17 on a combination of roads for 2,000 spirited miles
I have had these on the rear of my XFR for a few months now, it has the optional "R-S" size of 295/30/20. They get a hard life on a heavy >500bhp RWD car with quite relaxed electronics, and these are by far the best tires I have used on the rear of an XFR - various models of which have been my daily driver for 6.5 years now (about 90k miles covered in that time). Traction is superb in wet and dry conditions, and resistance to aquaplaning has been good as well. It is slightly concerning they come with

Best Review for the Toyo Proxes Comfort
Given 70% 195/55 R16 on mostly motorways for 500 easy going miles
I chose the Toyo Proxes Comfort because they had great price and Wet rating A. I have two on the rear and on the front I have two Michelin Energy Saver +. I can't really tell the difference from before when I had four of the above mentioned Michelin. They seem too have decent dry grip and feel good on wet too. I drive quite carefully and rarely push to the limit, although I must say I've done a couple of roundabouts and turns in a speedy manner without losing grip on the rear. So far so good, will see on the long run. For now, it's buy again

Conclusion

Bridgestone Potenza Sport dominates core safety and control: 3/3 overall wins, clean sweeps in dry and wet braking, and faster dry/wet handling. Its wet advantage is meaningful (circa 7-9% shorter wet stops across tests), it matches or beats Toyo in most aquaplaning drills, and unusually for a UUHP tire it posted excellent wear in Auto Bild (+20% mileage). The trade-offs are slightly higher cabin noise and efficiency/cost that can't always match a comfort-focused touring tire.
Toyo Proxes Comfort offers strong everyday value: quieter pass-by noise, softer ride impression, lower rolling resistance in two of three tests, and better € per 1,000 km in Auto Bild. However, its extended wet braking and milder lateral grip mean less margin in emergency manoeuvres and spirited driving. If grip and stopping distance are your priority, choose the Potenza Sport; if refinement and value are paramount for calm, urban or motorway use, the Proxes Comfort fits the brief.
Key Differences
  • Safety margin: Potenza Sport consistently stops shorter in dry and wet (up to ~9% in wet).
  • Handling intent: Bridgestone is sport-dynamic with higher lap/average speeds; Toyo is comfort-oriented with gentler responses.
  • Noise: Toyo is notably quieter (≈2-3 dB).
  • Wear/longevity: Bridgestone showed higher mileage in Auto Bild (+20%).
  • Efficiency/value: Toyo generally cheaper per set and per 1,000 km; often lower rolling resistance.
  • Aquaplaning nuance: Straight-line splits; Toyo edges some curved tests, but Bridgestone is broadly competitive.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tire industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tires in the same test.

Why is this important? Tire testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tire test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tire tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tire Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tire comparison, Tire Reviews doesn't.
