Continental launches the TerrainContact A/T2 for 2026

Continental has announced the TerrainContact A/T2, an all-season, all-terrain tire for crossovers, SUVs and light trucks. Unveiled from the company's Fort Mill, South Carolina base on 1 July 2026, it is the successor to the TerrainContact A/T and, according to Continental, is available now.

Positioning

Continental positions the A/T2 as an on-road-biased all-terrain tire for drivers who spend most of their miles on tarmac but still want the flexibility to handle unpaved roads and changing weather. The company frames it as a balance between rugged capability and everyday drivability rather than a hardcore off-road tire, which is the direction most of this category has taken.

Key technical points

  • Built around what Continental calls its TractionPlus Technology, which the company says underpins both the all-terrain grip and the on-road manners.
  • Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) certified, so it meets the industry threshold for severe snow service.
  • An updated, more aggressive tread pattern that Continental says adds off-road bite while keeping noise and ride comfort in check.

Manufacturer performance claims

The figures below are Continental's own, drawn from the company's internal testing, and have not yet been independently verified. Continental says the A/T2 improves wet braking and snow traction over the outgoing TerrainContact A/T, citing internal testing in size 275/65R18 for the wet-braking comparison. It also claims a quieter ride than the Michelin LTX A/T 2, Bridgestone Dueler A/T Ascent and Goodyear Wrangler Outbound AT, based on the average of its internal noise tests. As with any launch claim, on-road results will vary, and we would treat these numbers as marketing until they have been checked on neutral ground.

For context, the outgoing TerrainContact A/T did well in our own independent testing: it finished second out of nine tires in our 2022 all-terrain tire test, where it was one of the more road-friendly options in the group. That is a strong tire to build on, which is a big part of why we are keen to get the A/T2 tested.

What it means for drivers

On paper the TerrainContact A/T2 looks like a sensible evolution of a tire we already rate: keep the on-road comfort that made the original popular, add 3PMSF snow capability and sharpen the styling. Whether the claimed wet, snow and noise gains hold up in independent testing is the open question. We rate the outgoing TerrainContact A/T highly and plan to test the A/T2 ourselves in the near future, and we will report back on how well the claims stand up once tires are on the car.

Looking forward to this review and the new Nitto G3's. I sort of look at the Pirelli XTM's, Nitto G3's, Continental AT2's as the newest technology leaning (and hopefully newest and better capability based designs) advancements in A/T tires even though the XTM has already shown quite well.

Can't wait to see how this tire tests out, especially compared to the new Goodyear Outbound A/T. The two treads are remarkably similar and probably the next evolution of on-road A/T's. Two 285/70R17's are scheduled to roll out next year, an E and an S/L load range. Got a feeling my Ranger Raptor will be wearing the S/L's.
