Continental SportContact 7 vs Falken Azenis RS820

This head-to-head pits two max-performance summer tires aimed at enthusiastic road driving and occasional track use: Continental's established SportContact 7 versus Falken's new Azenis RS820. Both target sharp handling and short stopping distances on powerful performance cars.
Across two 2025 UUHP tests in 20-inch fitments, the SportContact 7 swept the overall wins (1/7 and 1/4), while the RS820 placed mid-pack (5/7 and 3/4). The data shows clear patterns in wet safety, aquaplaning resistance, and efficiency that will matter in real-world driving.

Test Results

Independent comparison tire tests are the best source of data to get tire information from, and the good news is there have been four tests which compare both tires directly!

Summary of four total tests comparing both tires directly
TireTest WinsPerformance
Continental SportContact 7four
four wins

While it might look like the Continental SportContact 7 is better than the Falken Azenis RS820 purely based on the higher number of test wins, tires are very complicated objects which means where one tire is better than the other can be more important in real world use.

Let's look at how the two tires compare across multiple tire test categories.

Key Strengths

  • Class-leading wet braking and aquaplaning resistance (up to ~21% advantage in curved aquaplaning)
  • Precise, balanced handling with high stability on dry and wet
  • Consistently shortest braking distances across both tests
  • Lower rolling resistance and generally low noise for the category
  • Strong dry cornering stability and harmonious handling
  • Competitive dry braking close to top tires
  • Typically lower purchase price/value-oriented positioning
  • Predictable transitions at the limit on dry roads

Dry Braking

Looking at data from four tire tests, the Continental SportContact 7 was better during four dry braking tests. On average the Continental SportContact 7 stopped the vehicle in 3.64% less distance than the Falken Azenis RS820.

Best Review for the Continental SportContact 7
Given 93% 305/35 R19 on a combination of roads for 2,500 spirited miles
Bought these based on the group test results and was not disappointed. The wet grip is at a new level! I've tracked them several times both in dry and wet and they didn't fail. I was especially impressed with how they held up during the day and the tread that was left afterwards. These tires transformed the driving experience both on the road and track.

Usually run FK520 tires where possible on my cars, but a recent purchase led me to try the RS820 due to the size. The tires are great in wet and dry conditions and i thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a high mid range tire.

Conclusion

The SportContact 7 consistently leads in safety-critical metrics: braking (dry and wet), balance at the limit, and both straight and curved aquaplaning. Its margins are meaningful-around 9-11% shorter wet braking and up to 21% better curved aquaplaning-translating to more margin for error in rain and standing water. It also combines precision with the lowest rolling resistance in Sport Auto, adding efficiency without sacrificing grip.
The Azenis RS820 delivers enjoyable, stable dry handling with smooth transitions and competitive dry braking, but it trails notably in wet grip and aquaplaning, and showed setup sensitivity at high speeds/track pace. If price is a priority and your driving is predominantly dry road use, it can make sense; otherwise, the Continental is the safer, more rounded choice. The practical takeaway: choose SportContact 7 for all-weather summer confidence and performance cars; choose RS820 if you're budget-focused and mostly drive hard in the dry.
Key Differences
  • Wet braking: Continental stopped 9-11% shorter (43.7 m vs 48.1 m; 29.1 m vs 32.8 m).
  • Aquaplaning: Continental led straight-line by ~4-5% and curved by ~14-21%, a significant safety gap.
  • Dry handling pace: Continental ~2-2.4% quicker, indicating higher grip and control headroom.
  • Efficiency: Continental showed 12% lower rolling resistance in Sport Auto (7.8 vs 8.9 kg/t).
  • Noise: Mixed-Falken slightly quieter in Autobild; Continental quieter in Sport Auto.
  • High-speed/track composure: Continental remained stable; Falken reached limits sooner with front-rear balance issues.

Footnote

This page has been developed using tire industry testing best practices. This means we are only comparing tests which have had both tires in the same test.

Why is this important? Tire testing is heavily affected by things like surface grip levels and surface temperature, which means you can only compare values from the same day. During a tire test external condition changes are calculated into the overall results, but it is not possible to calculate this between tire tests performed on different days or at different locations.

As a result you will see other tests on Tire Reviews which feature both the %s and %s, but as they weren't conducted on the same day, the results are not comparable.

Lots of other websites do this sort of tire comparison, Tire Reviews doesn't.
