2025 High Performance Winter Tire Test P5 of 6

The Continental WinterContact 8 S, derived from original equipment tires, offers precise, easily calculable, and safely neutral-to-understeering handling characteristics across all tested surfaces. Testers appreciated its good rolling comfort and very low rolling resistance, making it an efficient choice. However, this tire deviates from Continental's typically strong wet-weather reputation. Being optimized primarily for original equipment manufacturer requirements with emphasis on low rolling resistance, the WinterContact 8 S falls behind in wet braking, shows somewhat elevated aquaplaning risk, and delivers comparatively weak wet grip. Those expecting Continental's premium wet-weather product should look to the WinterContact TS 870P instead.

Strong: Wet Circle, Snow Traction, Rolling Resistance Weak: Wet Braking, Wet Handling, Straight Aqua, Curved Aquaplaning Winner: Michelin Pilot Alpin 5

Performance Analysis

Drawn from 1 tests. Updated October 28, 2026.

The Continental WinterContact 8 S finished fifth of six in the 2025 Sport Auto high-performance winter test in 275/35 R19. Its clearest strength was efficiency, with the lowest rolling resistance at 7.8 kg/t. Testers also praised comfort and precise, predictable handling balance. Snow braking was third of seven at 26.5 meters, 1.1% longer than the best, and snow traction was second. Dry handling placed fourth of seven, only 0.5% behind the best, supporting the favorable assessment of its road manners without making it a dry-performance leader.

Wet-road performance was the main weakness. Wet braking was sixth of seven at 32.9 meters, 3.8% longer than the best, and the wet-handling course result was last, 3.9% behind. Straight aquaplaning was sixth and curved aquaplaning last, 25.1% behind the best. The wet circle was a better second of seven, so the weakness was not identical in every wet discipline. Predictable behavior therefore coexisted with limited outright wet pace and standing-water resistance. This single test supports comfort and low rolling losses, but gives less reassurance about wet-road ability than those strengths alone might suggest.
