Methodology & Configuration
Scoring Process
  1. Collect Test Data: Gather results from professional tire tests across multiple publications. Minimum 1 test(s) required.
  2. Normalize Positions: Convert test positions to percentile scores using exponential weighting (factor: 1.2).
  3. Apply Recency Weighting: More recent tests are weighted higher with a decay rate of 0.95.
  4. Incorporate User Reviews: Factor in user review data (minimum 5 reviews). Weight: 15%.
  5. Bayesian Smoothing: Apply Bayesian prior (score: 7, weight: 1.5) to prevent extreme scores with limited data.
  6. Calculate Final Score: Combine all components using normalization factor of 1.1. Max score with limited data: 9.5.

Top 3 Continental 4x4 WinterContact Reviews

Given 94% while driving a Mercedes Benz ML (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 6,000 spirited miles
Best winter tires I have had on an SUV. Handle all winter conditions, especially harsh ones, with ease. Very confidence inspiring in slush.

Given 100% while driving a Volvo XC60 D5 AWD Auto (235/60 R18) on a combination of roads for 12,000 spirited miles
Used on my Volvo XC60 D5 AWD after reading lots of reviews. In the UK we had heavy snowfall this year and I was one of the few unaffected. At times I even got looks of envy from struggling drivers sliding around in lane 1 while I made my own tracks through the fresh snow in lane 2.

These cut through snow without any hassle at all, on country lanes which were ungritted and across inclines/declines they didn't flinch. Better than sottozero's which were my favourite winter rubber, until now that is. Even took for some light off-road action across a soggy field and they coped well.

I do plenty of mileage around 25-30k per annum. These tires are also reassuring on both dry and wet surfaces in low temperature. There have been a few odd warm days around 12 degrees but the tires don't fell overly soft or sloppy when the temperature climbs (there have been 15 degree swings in temperature this year!). However it is time to put summers back on but can't wait to get these out the garage again in winter.

The wear has been great too still plenty left for next year and my mpg was slightly better than the summer tires. Also quieter. It's a glowing review from me for these tires, exceptional.

Given 100% while driving a Volvo XC60 D5 AWD Auto (225/45 R17) on a combination of roads for 1,000 spirited miles
Used on my XC60 D5 In snow and ice, where other people have been crawling along or stranded, I've had no such issues. The traction in fresh snow is admirable and in ice is reassuring.

My wife and kids use this car, I have no hesitation with them going out in the snow when fitted with these. My current tire of choice.

Mixture of A roads, B roads and motorway driving as well as still being fine on the mild days, not sloppy and actually increased mpg!

Given 89% while driving a Volvo XC70 D5 (215/65 R16) on a combination of roads for 6,000 average miles
Excellent Tire.

Have them fitted to an XC70 as a winter tire in the UK. They go in late November and come off in early April.

Last year we had standing ice outside our front door (and for 5-6 miles down and below our house) for around 3 weeks. It was nigh on impossible to walk on the ice- the car with these fitted was immensely impressive- braking distances weren't much less than usual, and acceleration was easy too.

For us it was a no-brainer.

I am delighted that these tires, driving the Volvo XC90 2.4 D5 in the mountainous roads and highways as the tire is excellent and the wet and dry and the snow and ice ....My recommendation for all the SUVs for the winter by the tire.
