As we've seen in other tests, the Nankang Econex NA-1 objectively performed well, for the price point it had good grip in grip tests, and had good aquaplaning resistance and low noise, however subjectively it was one of the tricker tires to drive on the VW Golf test car, with a rapid transition between grip and oversteer. If you want a fun, cheap, track day tire in a 16" wheel size, this is the tire for you.

The Nankang Econex NA1's relative strengths are dry handling and, in some comparisons, aquaplaning resistance. Its third-of-nine finish in Tire Reviews' 2023 budget comparison looks unusually strong beside 12th of 13 in the 2023 touring test and 14th of 15 with Test World in 2015, but the budget field was much less demanding. Dry handling was second of nine against the budget-led field and seventh of 13 among touring rivals. Both 2023 tests recorded the same 38.45 m dry stop and 39.61 m wet stop, so their different rankings reflect the competition rather than different stopping ability.

Wet braking remained 25.4% longer than the best in both 2023 comparisons, despite third place in one and 12th in the other. Test World also criticised long wet stops and weak lateral grip in 2015. The testers repeatedly found abrupt transitions into oversteer, making the tire difficult at the limit. Aquaplaning was second in both disciplines in the budget comparison, but only tenth and ninth in the touring field; Test World judged resistance good. Rolling resistance was seventh of nine and last of 13 in 2023, while comfort and noise attracted criticism elsewhere. Its entertaining dry handling did not make it a balanced road tire.

As we've seen in other tests, the Nankang Econex NA-1 objectively performed well, for the price point it had good grip in grip tests, and had good aquaplaning resistance and low noise, however subjectively it was one of the tricker tires to drive on the VW Golf test car, with a rapid transition between grip and oversteer. If you want a fun, cheap, track day tire in a 16" wheel size, this is the tire for you.

The Nankang Econex NA1 was next up, considerably better than the Doublecoin but perhaps not a tire that could be classified as great as it had long braking distances in the dry and wet, poor aquaplaning resistance, high noise and a high rolling resistance. It would however make a fun 16" dry weather track tire if you don't want to fit a semi slick.

The Nankang Econex NA-1 have long braking distances and a very weak lateral grip on wet surfaces. Sharp maneuvers are unlikely to succeed because the tires can dramatically lose contact with the road. However, they have good resistance to aquaplaning. In the dry the situation is somewhat better, but they don't cope well enough with emergency situations. Not very effective at absorbing road irregularities, and noise is clearly audible in the cabin. Only average fuel economy.
