The Nankang AS1 has a weak record across both tests, particularly for wet braking and handling. It finished last of ten in the 2019 Auto Zeitung Summer Tire Test and seventh of eight in Vi Bilagare's 2020 SUV test. Auto Zeitung placed it last in wet braking, with a stop 41.6% longer than the best, and last in wet handling, 11% behind the quickest. Vi Bilagare also found low grip, with seventh of eight in wet braking and handling, 19.1% and 8.7% from the best respectively. Dry results were below average too, including last in Auto Zeitung's handling test and seventh of eight in Vi Bilagare's dry braking.
Low purchase price is a consistent attraction, and measured noise was second of ten with Auto Zeitung in 2019. That did not translate to a clear noise advantage in Vi Bilagare's subjective assessment, where it was fifth of eight. Aquaplaning resistance was last of ten in 2019 and seventh of eight in 2020, while rolling resistance was last and seventh respectively. Behavior at the limit differed: Auto Zeitung found it unstable in wet handling, whereas Vi Bilagare's praise for progressive breakaway and early warning was an unusually positive finding, despite noting an oversteer balance and low grip in all conditions.
