2017 Car and Driver UHP Tire Test P4 of 5

This tire possesses the rare and admirable ability to maintain relatively high grip compared with its peak grip even as the tire begins to slide. This is particularly apparent when the front end begins to push into understeer. Where other tires scrub speed and sail off the driving line, the Hankooks hang on longer and with only a slight drift off the intended path. This means the driver is scarcely penalized for sloppy piloting. The Hankook is easy to drive at the limit, with quicker than average recovery when the driver attempts to reel it all in. In other categories, the Hankook impresses less. The Ventus V12 Evo2 is laterally soft when loaded up in a corner, and steering inputs are imprecise. On wet surfaces, its favorable progressivism dries up. It also emits tones that penetrate the cabin, with a high-pitched zip as it rolls and loud thumps over imperfections. And while easy to drive, the Hankook's performances in both dry and wet tests were only marginally better than those of the Goodyear. Its fourth-place position was cemented by this objective performance that placed it in, well, fourth place.

Performance Analysis

Drawn from 2 tests. Updated October 28, 2026.

The Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 finished fourth in both tests, though that meant 4th of 9 in the 2015 Auto Motor Und Sport test and 4th of 5 in the 2017 Car and Driver test. The results and verdicts were mixed. Auto Motor Und Sport praised its wet-road performance and short dry braking distance, while Car and Driver found it easy to drive at the dry limit, with the front end holding its line relatively well as it began to slide. In the latter test, dry braking was 4th of 5, but only 2.9% longer than the best.

The wet results were less consistent. Car and Driver placed it 4th of 5 in wet handling, 5.7% slower than the best, and 4th in wet braking, with a stopping distance 13.4% longer than the best. That contrasts with the earlier praise for wet performance. Auto Motor Und Sport also noted relatively weak aquaplaning resistance and high rolling resistance. Car and Driver criticised the soft feel under cornering load and imprecise steering, as well as intrusive tones and thumps from the road. That noise verdict is an unusual contrast with its measured result of 66 dB, the lowest of the five tires in the 2017 test.
