2026 Tire Rack All-Weather vs Winter Tire Test P4 of 5Winter

The Altimax Arctic 12 is the value winter choice here. Even unstudded it is comfortably better in snow and on ice than any all-season tire in the test, and it is easy to live with day to day, but its road manners and steering precision are the price of that. Predictable and forgiving rather than sharp.

Performance Analysis

Drawn from 2 tests. Updated October 28, 2026.

The General Altimax Arctic 12 has a mixed winter test record, with low noise more consistent than its outright grip. Consumer Reports placed it seventh of 17 in its 2020 North America Winter Tire Test, describing its snow and ice ratings as excellent for the category and finding it quieter than most alternatives. In the 2026 Tire Rack All-Weather vs Winter Tire Test it finished fourth of five winter tires. Noise remained a relative strength, second of five in that class, while dry circle grip was joint best within the winter group.

The newer test was less favorable on braking and steering. Wet braking was fourth of five winter tires, 22.2% behind the class best, and dry braking was also fourth, 11.5% behind. Snow braking and handling were fourth in class, while ice braking was fourth, 18.6% behind the best winter result. That unusually weak winter showing contrasts with the favorable 2020 verdict. Tire Rack also criticised imprecise self-centring and quick wheelspin in snow. Its praise for comfort and its advantage over all-season tires on ice gives useful context, but does not remove those weaknesses within the winter class.
