Max Performance Passenger Car Tire Tests

How much faster are track day tires compared to the best road tires? The German publication Sport Auto have produced the answer by taking seven of the best maximum performance road tires and three of the best track day tires, and placing them all through the same testing on a Toyota GT86 (225/40 R18).

This year Sport Auto have chosen 235/40 R18 as their ultra high performance tire test size. Sadly, this resulted in a couple of the key new tires being left out, so Sport Auto also tested the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 in 225/40 R18 and the Continental Sport Contact 6 in 235/35 R19 to get an approximate idea of how they compared, but excluded them from the final results.

The test we've all been waiting for is here, and it's round one to Continental.

The 2016 Auto Bild Sports Cars tire test placed six maximum performance tires through their paces on a Jaguar F-Type, in 255/35 R20 front and 295/30 R20 rear sizes.

The new Continental Sport Contact 6 was tested against the reigning performance tire king, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport, and the result was surprising.

Testing in 225/45 R17, the GTU test is the first test to include the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, Dunlop Sport Maxx RT2, Falken Azenis FK510, Toyo Proxes T1 Sport+ and GT Radial SportActive amongst the fourteen tires tested! It's not often we report on tire tests from across the pond. The tires, roads, and driving conditions can be very different, especially in North America, however this test from the Australian magazine "Australian Motor" was too interesting / random to miss.

Fortunately, Germany has the answer, and this year Sport Auto Magazine tested seven patterns in 235/35 R19, the most common 19" tire size on the market, using a VW Golf R.

For the 2015 ultra high performance tire test, Auto Bild have chosen the new BMW M4, wearing 275/35 R19 rear and 255/35 R19 fronts. While this limits the amount of tires available to test to just seven, it is a very good test car as the M4 is the benchmark for the current breed of big-wheeled super-saloons!

Here at TireReviews we always get excited when EVO publish a tire test. Normally tire tests focus on raw numbers, dedicating pages to telling you which tire has 0.1% more grip, but forgetting to mention how the tires actually feel on the car.

Conversely EVO spend plenty of time, and dedicate 60% of the overall result, to subjective handling. With the difference in grip between the best tires on the market ever shrinking, explaining how the tires actually feel to use give people who enjoy driving a good reference point. This years test was carried out at the Bridgestone test track in Italy, on a VW Golf GTI wearing 225/45 R17 tires.

A 444bhp Mustang Boss 302 might not be the last word in car dynamics, but it's what the Russian magazine Auto Review have chosen to use for their 2014 Max Performance tire test. Wearing massive 255/40 R19 front tires, and 285/35 R19 rears, this was never going to be an "ordinary" tire test, and the inclusion of a drifting test only highlighted the testers were out to have fun driving while getting their data.

While some tire tests end up testing a seemingly random selection of both new and old tires, Sport Auto seem to have hit the sweet spot with their latest summer ultra high performance tire test.

Using a VW Golf GTI, and testing 235/35 R19 tires Sport Auto took a no-nonsense approach and tested 9 of the newest, and greatest tires on the market, only omitting the brand new Dunlop Sport Maxx RT in favour of its higher performance brother, the Dunlop Sport Maxx GT.

Traditionally, German based Auto Bild put together some of the best tire tests in the world, and in 2012 they've set a new benchmark.

Not content with picking 15 of the top tires to test, Auto Bild started with 50 of the leading tires in 225/45 R17, and subjected them to wet and dry braking, only putting through the top 15 to this test to ensure the tires on test really are the best of the best.

Subjecting just the top 15 tires from the braking tests to the usual array of handling tests have left the results closer than ever, but with some surprise tires included. Of course, with only 15 of 50 going through there's some surprise ommisions, with the Falken FK453, Yokohama Advan Sport, Vredestein Ultra Cento and Avon ZV5 not even making it to the top 25 of the knockout test.

It's not often you get the chance to test different tires on identical vehicles, and even rarer that the tires in question are two of the newest, most exciting max performance summer tires on the market, but this is exactly what we found ourselves presented with recently at Ascari race circuit.

The tires in question are the latest offerings from Continental and Dunlop, with each of the four cars being fitted with a set of Continental Sport Contact 5s, and a set of the brand new Dunlop SportMaxx RT, all in 245/40 R18. Two of the vehicles comprised of the high performance coupe from Audi, the TT S, and the other two were the the high powered Audi S4 saloon.
